Thousands of international students migrate every year to a different country in pursuit of better education and academic career. The international higher education industry is so huge today that for many countries like Australia and Canada, the contribution to their national economy is in billions.
This shows how much competitive this industry has become, both for the universities and for the international students. The general criteria of university admission for an international student is the academic score depending upon the course type, language test score, financial background, visa, and so on. However, other than fulfilling these standard criteria, a lot of factors come into play that affects the acceptance rate of international students to a university.
Here, we will talk about those other factors which universities take into consideration and can affect the acceptance rate of an international student.
1. Genuineness in the interest
Universities look for students who are genuinely passionate about studying a particular course or have a genuine motive of interest. Your application will not be compelling enough for universities if you are not able to show your genuine passion or curiosity about learning. So, having good grades in academics and test scores is not enough. You need to have worked in that particular field. You have contributed something good in that area. Or at least have a general understanding of the area with a genuine passion to achieve something in that field.
2. Increased international competition
As mentioned earlier, the international education industry is growing much bigger than before. Canada welcomed 450,000 new international students in 2021. Talking about Australia, even with strict pandemic protocols for international students, nearly 50,000 international students arrived in the country in February 2022. The industry is being competitive day by day. So, even if you are a student with good grades and all the required qualities, the increased competition can reduce your acceptance rate into a university.
3. Government policy
Government policies have more of an impact on education than you might think. That means government funding and strategy play a vital role in determining the acceptance rate of international students in a particular subject area. For instance, the Australian government through its Australian Strategy for International Education 2021‑2030 focuses on a stronger alignment between international education and Australia’s skills needs. Beyond traditional course choices of management, commerce, and IT, Australia plans to wider its offerings in other key areas. Other key areas are engineering, maths, health, and so on. So, the acceptance rate for engineering, maths, health, and so on might increase due to the prioritization through the government.

4. Number of seats
Many top- international universities offer limited seats to international students. It is because most of the seats are well-reserved for the domestic students. The number of seats also depends upon the type of the course you are choosing and the university. The courses with a limited number of seats will accept students with early bird applications. Due to this, your acceptance rate can be affected compared to other courses with a larger number of seats.
