Why is Australia a popular destination for Nepalese students?

Nepalese students have always been preferring international universities and colleges over the local ones. Before, the United States and the United Kingdom were among the favourites. However, students are now looking for more affordable universities with reasonably priced living expenses and a permanent residency pathway after completing a required degree. Many of the countries such as the USA, the UK and many other European nations countries and Japan and Korea have all closed down or made strict rules for their permanent residency through education. In recent times, Australia has become a popular destination for international students as it fits students’ requirements.

According to the Department of Education, skills and employment, there were 758,154 international students in Australia up to 2019. Nepal ranked third with 7% of students after China and India with 28% and 15% respectively. The data also indicates a 25% rise of Nepalese international students from December 2018.

Affordable top-quality universities

Australia has six universities which are ranked in the top 100 universities globally. Students have over 43 universities and a multitude of different degrees and majors to choose from. There are plenty of different options and combinations to choose from, ranging from engineering,  or medicine, to English or mathematics. Most courses in Australia are designed to be short. This makes the course a lot cheaper than those offered by their counterparts like the UK, US and other European countries.

Multicultural

People from around 200 different countries are staying in Australia. Therefore, it is easy to say Australia is a highly multicultural country. You can step out of your comfort zone and experience a new culture, culinary, public international celebrations or even get to learn a new language. Some of the cities like Sydney and Melbourne have an ever-growing Nepalese community. This makes it quite easy has been a blessing for new Nepalese students to adjust to a new environment. It has become easier for students to get a job or, rent a room as a part of being in the community.

Easy access to student visas

Australia offers a streamlined process for the student visa called subclass 500. Being accepted in a recognised educational institution and, having sufficient financial capacity are some of the requirements you will need to fulfil to get your application approved. The time is taken to process visas, and the number of documents required as proof of identification has significantly reduced over the past couple of years.

Job opportunities

Australia offers all the students a variety of job opportunities. It’s a country which welcomes all kinds of professionals from healthcare workers to construction workers. The national minimum wage in Australia is $19.84 per hour or $753.80 per 38 hours per week (before tax). A minimum of 25% casual loading is also offered to the casual employees covered by the national minimum wage. As a student, you can legally work up to 40 hours a fortnight. Therefore, even with minimum wage, you can easily pay for your rent, grocery and transport expenses every week. Australia also provides a Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485), allowing international students to stay and work in Australia even after they have graduated. This is a great way to work full time in your field of interest, which can eventually help you grow in your career.

Australia is famous for its diverse terrains. If you are a beach lover, you are in for a treat. Australia has some of the famous beaches in the world like Bondi Beach, Manly Beach, Whitehaven beach, and so on. Nepalese students are not connected to any oceans in their country, so it is always fascinating to visit a beach. Australia has also got other outdoor activities like coastal walk, bushwalking, snorkelling and so on.

Vibrant city life

Australia is one of the most liveable cities and has some of the best city in the world, making it attractive for Nepalese students. Bigger Cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and the Gold coast is where you can experience vibrant city life. Renowned for having fantastic pubs, clubs, casinos and bars, these cities have plenty to offer.

Pathway for permanent residency

Australia provides different courses that lead to permanent residency like Engineering, Nursing, IT, and so on. Nepalese students seeking permanent residency can study this course. After completing their courses and fulfilling some of the key requirements, they are eligible for permanent residency. 73,740 Nepalese were living in Australia at the end of June 2017, which is nine times greater than the number at 30 June 2007. More than 3000 Nepalese people acquired Australian citizenship between 1 July 2018 and 30 June 2019, which is the eighth highest.
