Some Changes in English Language Requirements in Australia

The Australian government has implemented some changes to the English language requirement for its visa applicants after the implementation of “OSR”. English language requirements are generally applicable to those who wish to study or work in Australia. Students or workers willing to apply must provide evidence of their English language skills. This ensures the attainment of the necessary language skills to live, work, and study in Australia.

Changes in the IELTS requirements:

In Australia, IELTS has high recognition as an English language test for visa applications. Applicants can take the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test and score at least the required level for the visa. The test consists of four components: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. As per the new changes, the applicants can take an OSR (One Skill Retest). This means applicants can retake the test for any one of the components if their previous test results were not satisfactory.

It is important to note that the English language requirement for visa applications in Australia changes from time to time. So we suggest checking the most up-to-date requirements with the Department of Home Affairs.

OSR and its Requirements:

IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) will be available for certain test takers beginning December 14, 2022. OSR enables test takers to retake one of the four test components (reading, writing, speaking, or listening) (once only).

Anyone willing to give OSR must complete some requirements. Due to certain requirements, not everyone appearing the IELTS are eligible. The maximum time between the previous IELTS test and IELTS One Skill Retake is 60 calendar days. So, this means the applicants must take the IELTS One Skill Retake test within 60 days of their original test.

Who is Exempted from OSR?

The Department will accept IELTS test results that include OSR for Australian visa purposes. However, there are some exceptions. The applications for subclasses 476, 482, and 485, require scores from a single sitting/attempt.

Australia’s visa subclass 476 is the “Skilled – Recognised Graduate” visa. It is a temporary visa for recent engineering graduates who belong to institutions outside of Australia and want to gain work experience in Australia. But this visa allows holders to work and study in Australia for only up to 18 months. Likewise, Visa subclass 482 is the “Temporary Skill Shortage” visa. It is a temporary work visa that allows employers to sponsor foreign workers to fill skills shortages in their business.

Finally, Visa subclass 485 is the “Temporary Graduate” visa. It is a temporary visa that allows international students who have recently graduated from an Australian educational institution to live, work, and study in Australia temporarily. Any applicants who appear IELTS test for these visa subclasses are not eligible for OSR.
